Pre Game: Sound Tigers at Springfield Falcons

Sound Tigers at Springfield Falcons

The Sound Tigers are looking to keep the points coming in as they go up against the Springfield Falcons. With four games in five days last weekend, the Sound Tigers strong play got them points in every game.

Springfield 11-11-0-1, is coming off of a tough 4-2 loss to the league leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Tomas Kubalik had an impressive night, scoring Springfield's only two goals and five shots.

Bridgeport 10-11-1-1, is coming off of an impressive 3-o win against the Norfolk Admirals. Kevin Poulin played well and got his second consecutive shutout, stopping all 40 shots that the Admirals threw at him.
Key Players:
For Springfield, look for Matt Calvert. The rookie left winger had nine goals and eight assist in twenty three games for Springfield. He leads the Falcons in points with seventeen.

For Bridgeport, watch number ten Rhett Rakhshani. In twenty three games with the Sound Tigers this rookie has seven goals and nine assists for a team leading sixteen points. He also leads the Sound Tigers in shots with fifty two.

Oct 30th game vs Manchester rescheduled for January 9th at 7:30

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced today that the game that was supposed to be played on October 30th against the Manchester Monarchs has been rescheduled for Sunday January 9th. Due to a Sacred Heart University basketball game earlier in the day, the game time will be a 7:30pm puck drop.

The game was postponed because of a midterm election campaign attended by president Barack Obama. Due to security reasons and time constraints, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers were asked by the secret service to postpone the game. “It is an honor and a privilege to have the President of the United States visit our beautiful arena,” said Howard Saffan, President of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

From SoundTigers.com "The Sound Tigers will honor tickets that fans purchased for the Oct. 30 game on Jan. 9. In addition, fans who purchased tickets to the originally scheduled Oct. 30 game that are unable to attend the rescheduled Jan. 9 game can exchange their tickets for another Sound Tigers game. The exchanged tickets will be of equal value and these exchanges cannot be made on gamedays."

Bridgeport Sound Tigers Fan Blog Player Of The Month: Kevin Poulin

I have picked the Bridgeport Sound Tiger Fan Blog player of the month for the month of November. The player of the month is Sound Tigers goaltender Kevin Poulin.

Poulin finished the month strong with four great starts. In his last two games, he has shut out the opposing team, earning the first star in both games. However, it was no easy task, the first shut out came against the Portland Pirates. Portland, whose offense was first in the league, took 29 shots and kept Poulin on his guard, but they just could not get the puck past him. The second shut out came days later when the Sound Tigers played another highly ranked offensive team, the Norfolk Admirals. Poulin was peppered with shot after shot, but the Admirals could not get anything by him. He ended the game with a 40 save shut out and a standing ovation from the crowd at Arena at Harbor Yard.

In 9 games this season, Poulin has made 275 saves, only letting in 18 goals. He has 6 wins and 3 assists so far this season and boasts the best recored among all three Sound Tiger goaltenders.

Islanders sign forward Jeremy Colliton to a one year, two way contract

The New York Islanders have signed center Jeremy Colliton to a one year, two way(NHL/AHL) deal. Colliton was signed to a Professional Tryout Contract on October 21 and has been with the team since that time. He is also one of the assistant captains on the team.

The 25 year old has played 18 games so far this season and has tallied two goals and an assist. It may not look like much, but he is a great leader on the ice and a tremendous penalty killer.

This isn't the first time that Colliton has played for the Sound Tigers. He has played three seasons, skating in 250 career games. At 25, he is already an AHL veteran. Last year he played in the Swedish Elite League and has come back faster than ever.

Game Preview: Sound Tigers.vs.Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale

Sound Tigers.vs.Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday
7pm, Arena at Harbor Yard
Sound Tigers at Connecticut Whale "Hartford Wolf Pack" on Saturday
7pm, XL Center

The Sound Tigers are looking to rebound after a tough overtime loss to the Providence Bruins on Wednesday. With three games on this weekend the Sound Tigers will need to leave it all out on the ice if they want to get the six possible points available. Two of the games will come at home on Friday night against Hartford Wolf Pack in what will be the last game ever played by the Wolf Pack. The next day the Hartford will switch from the Wolf Pack to the Connecticut Whale and the Whale's first game will come against the Sound Tigers on Saturday night. By changing the team's name to the Connecticut Whale Hartford's Management is looking to bring back some old Hartford Whalers fans even through a lot of Wolf Pack fans are up set with the change.

Last time they played each other:
The last time the Sound Tigers played Hartford the game was a one sided shalacking for the Sound Tigers. The Sound Tigers poor play lead to a 7-1 loss with four of Hartford's goals coming on the power play.

Records/Last games:
Hartford 6-11-2-2 is currently in 7th position in the Atlantic Division is coming off a 4-1 loss to the defending Calder Cup champions the Hersey Bears. Hartford leads the Atlantic Division in penalty minutes with 433.

Bridgeport 8-11-1-0 is currently in 6th position in the Atlantic Division and is coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to the Providence Bruins. Though the Sound Tigers had a tough time getting things going Kevin Poulin stood tall keeping the Sound Tigers in the game and earning the third star.

Key Players:
For Hartford, Chad Kolarik who was just acquired in a trade from Springfield has three goals and two assists in only five games for Hartford and had four goals and six assists in thirteen games for the Springfield Falcons.

For Bridgeport look for Josh Bailey to be in and around the play more. Bailey, who was sent down to Bridgeport in a shocking move by the New York Islanders went pointless in his first game as a Sound Tiger but was all around the play. In overtime against Providence he had a breakaway he was pulled down on but there was no call. Look for Bailey to be eager to score.

Sound Tigers.vs.Norfolk Admirals
7pm, Arena at Harbor Yard
Card set #1 night
The Sound Tigers are looking to end a three game losing streak tonight as the Norfolk Admirals come into Arena at Harbor Yard tonight. The Sound Tigers played on Thursday and Friday against the Charlotte Checkers and Charlotte dominated both games winning 6-1 and 6-5. The Sound Tigers hope to respond tonight and get a win.

Norfolk 7-3-2-1 have 17 points this season and ranks fourth in the Eastern Conference. Norfolk is coming off a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the Adirondack Phantoms Friday night. The last two goals Adirondack scored came on the power play. The Sound tigers will need to take advantage of Norfolk's penalty kill if they hope to win.

Bridgeport 5-9-0-0 have 10 points this season and and rank fourteenth in the Eastern Conference. They are coming off back to back loses against the Charlotte Checkers 6-1 and 6-5. If the Sound Tigers want to win this game they will have to put in some more effort in there zone in front of the net.

Key Players
For Norfolk, look to their goal. Two young stars play between the pipes for Norfolk, Dustin Tokarski and Cedrick Desjardins. Tokarski, lead the the Canadian Junior National Team to a gold medal in 2009 and had a break out year with the Admirals last year. Desjardins, had 29 wins and 9 loses in 09-10 with Hamilton. They will make it a real challenge for Bridgeport tonight.

For Bridgeport Tony Romano has been on fire lately with a goal in the last two games, He looks to have found his game as he is always in the play and putting forth an extra effort to get a stick on the puck or stay on for another ten seconds to get the puck in deep. He will try and keep his goal streak going tonight

Sound Tigers drop two in a row to Charlotte

The Sound Tigers were looking to bounce back from there 7-1 lose last Sunday but that wouldn't be as they came out with the same lack luster performance and lost to the Charlotte Checkers 6-1. Sound Tigers goalie Nathan Lawson was hung out to dry on Thursday with no team defense at all, Poulin got some help Friday but at least the Tigers found some offense.

Thursday, 6-1 lose to Charlotte.
Thursday's was one of the worst the Sound Tigers have played this year, and the score indicated it. Nathan Lawson got starting his second consecutive game and he played well. Six goals against does not show how well he played. The team came out flat with no motivation. As the Charlotte broadcaster put it "If it wasn't for Lawson the game would be 6 or 7-1. Now we can see what every one is talking about, he is alone out there." . Tony Romano would get the only goal for the Sound Tigers as they just could not find any offense. The power play continues to struggle now 10 for 63 this season which makes you ask, why put a guy like Micheal Haley or Jeremy Yablonski out on the power play, guys who are meant to fight are not goal scorers. Charlotte broadcasters also said "You know things are bad when Yablonski's out there on the power play." which i couldn't help but agree with and laugh a bit. In the end Charlotte won 6-1 with Micflikier getting a hat trick. Lawson has to be getting fed up with the poor performances his team is putting out in front of him. As the Charlotte broadcasters put it , "Lawson has pored his heart out but his team hasn't" that means alot coming from another teams broadcast.

Friday, 6-5 lose to Charlotte.
It didn't take more than a minute for Charlotte to take the lead as a shot hit off of Sound Tiger goalie Kevin Poulin and trickled into the net, Poulin would have liked to have had that one back but from then on he was on fire. He made a couple key saves on breakaways and cross crease passes to keep the Tigers in the game but the defense was no where to be seen again to night as Charlotte got goals off a redirection in front and a turn over down low with a man wide open out front for an easy goal. Haley dropped his gloves twice in the first when no one else on the ice did and made him look pretty dumb. The only bright spot of the first was Tony Romano's second goal in two games to make it 3-1. Figren slipped one by the Charlotte goalie to make it 3-2 in the start of the second but it wouldn't last long as Charlotte scored two goals on plays where Poulin was screened by his own man and made it 5-2 Charlotte. Rakhshani would bring the Sound Tigers within two as he burred the lose puck off a rebound with 9.8 seconds to go in the second.
Another man wide open in front tipped a puck past Poulin to make it 6-3 in the third. A late rally by the Sound Tigers saw Svendsen and Colliton get there first goals of the season but Charlotte held off the Sound tigers and took the game 6-5.

Game Preview: Sound Tigers at Charlotte Checkers

Sound Tigers at Charlotte Checkers
7pm, Thursday and Friday night
Time Warner Cable Arena
Sound Tigers look to get a win in their first ever meeting against the Charlotte Checkers. Charlotte is in their first year in the American Hockey League and face back to back games against the Sound Tigers. The Sound Tigers will be without the help of John Sim since he has been recalled by the New York Islanders, but they have signed forward Trent Campbell to a Professional Tryout Contract, he has 1 goal and 4 assists in eight games in the East Coast Hockey League this year.

Charlotte 6-7-1-2 is coming off of a 5-2 loss against the defending Calder Cup champions, the Hershey Bears. Zac Dalpe and Chris Terry both scored for Charlotte in the loss.

Bridgeport 5-7-0-0 is looking to rebound from an embarrassing 7-1 loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack. Robin Figren tallied the only goal for the Sound Tigers

Key Players:
For Charlotte, look out for Zach Boychuk who is on fire and leads Charlotte in points with 16, 6 goals and 9 assists. Although he is leading in points, he is a minus 5.

For Bridgeport, David Ullstrom is leading the Sound Tigers in goals with 4. He is impressing a lot of people in the Islanders organization, always involved in both ends of the the ice.

Sound Tigers defense falls apart losing to Hartford 7-1

The Sound Tigers were missing four key players last night, as they took the ice against the Hartford Wolf Pack, and it showed as they were owned by the Wolf Pack, 7-1.

In the first, Hartford's power play was on fire, at 9:25 with Jeremy Yablonski in the box for a sketchy tripping call, Hartford Mats Zuccarello found himself wide open in the slot and put one past Bridgeport's Nathan Lawson to make it 1-0. A short time later, Micheal Haley went to the box after being called for boarding. Jeremy Williams would score on a shot from the point that tipped off a Sound Tiger stick and up past the glove of Lawson to make it 2-0. With four seconds remaining in the first, Zuccarello found himself again wide open in the slot giving Lawson no chance to stop the shot, 3-0 Hartford. Shots in the period, For Hartford 12 and for Bridgeport 5.

The Sound Tigers couldn't find a way to stop the Wolf Pack power play in the second as Zuccarello got the hat trick. Carrying the puck over the line and into the slot he took a wrister that beat a screened Lawson making it 4-0. After a good rush by the Sound Tigers, they were caught deep in the zone and Hartford came back on a three on one. Even a diving Katic couldn't prevent Kelsey Tessier from tapping home the pass, past a splitting Lawson, making the score 5-0. Shots in the Period for Hartford 13 and Bridgeport 8.

Hartford's power play continued to be effective as not even two minutes into the third Williams put one through the arm of a two pad stacked Lawson to make it 6-0, Hartford had it's forth goal on the power play. The Sound Tigers got on the board however as Robin Figren put one past Chad Johnson on an almost impossible angle and made it 6-1. Hartford got one more from Dane Byers to make it 7-1. There was some rough stuff at the end seeing Yablonski and Soryal drop the gloves, which turned into a hugging match more than anything. Tempers flared towards the end, but nothing too big would come out of it. Shots in the period for Hartford 6 and the Sound Tigers 12.

Game Preview: Sound Tigers at Hartford Wolf Pack

Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Hartford Wolf Pack
7:00pm, XL Center
The Sound Tigers look for their second win this weekend and to sweep tonight as they play the Hartford Wolf Pack. This is the second game of the weekend home and home series. The Sound Tigers took the first game at Harbor Yard 4-1. Now all eyes turn to the XL Center for tonights game.

Last time they played each other:
It was last night at Arena at Harbor Yard. The game was close all the way through, with both teams trading scoring chances, although the score did not reflect it. The Sound Tigers got two from Jon Sim and one from Rob Hisey and Jesse Joensuu on their way to a 4-1 win. Some bad news for the Sound Tigers however, is the fact that Jon Sim, Justin DiBenedetto, Dustin Kohn, and Jean Borbeau all left the game due to injury and did not return.

Being that the two teams played each other last night their records now are, Bridgeport 5-6-0-0 move up to fifth in the Atlantic Division while Hartford 3-8-2-1 falls to seventh in the Atlantic Division. If this game is played like last night, it will be noticeably physical with it's fair share of fights.
Key Players:
With a couple of key players possibly out for Bridgeport in tonights game look for Rob Hisey to step up. Hisey leads the team with three goals and eight assists including a goal last night against Hartford and another one he put in that was credited to Jon Sim.

For Hartford look for Kris Newbury. Newbury leads Hartford with one goal and eight assists for nine points this season.

Sound Tigers defeat Wolf Pack 4-1

The Sound Tigers got their first win of the year against their arch rivals the Hartford Wolf Pack tonight with a 4-1 win. However, the score does not indicate how close the game was. Also, the Sound Tigers had four players who did not return to the game due to injuries.

The first period started off with a bang, when Sound Tiger Jean Borbeau railed Pavel Valentenko into the boards. Valentenko was down for a bit before getting helped off the ice by the trainer. During that time, Borbeau was jumped by Hartford's Dane Byers. Both received five minutes for fighting with an extra two going to Byers for roughing. The Sound Tigers would capitalize on the power play as Rob Hisey jammed it past the Hartford goalie. The puck was over the line, but the ref could not tell, for good measure Jon Sim hit it all the way in and was credited the goal making it 1-0. Poulin made a couple good glove saves keeping the Sound Tigers ahead. Shots in the period, for Bridgeport 13 and Hartford 8.

Sound Tigers would strike quickly in the second, as Jon Sim banked one off of Wolf Pack goalie Cameron Talbot and into the net to make it 2-0, only :45 seconds into the second. Tony Romano would score three minutes later for the Sound Tigers to put them up 3-0. With the game slipping away, Hartford put out their tough guys to try and gain some momentum. Justin Soryal and Borbeau dropped the gloves, and five seconds after that, Jeremy Yablonski fought Jared Nightingale; Yablonski threw Nightingale around like it was nothing. After Borbeau's bout, he left the ice and appeared to be hurt. He would not return in the game. With 2:15 left to go in the second, a scrum in front of the net, lead to Justin DiBenedetto getting mauled and being thrown to the ground. DiBenedetto would receive a double minor and be lead off the ice. He would not return to the game due to possible injury. Poulin stood on his head this period, seeing numerous odd man rushes, he stood tall and kept his shutout going. Shots in the period, for Bridgeport 7 and Hartford 11.

Poulin's bid for a shutout would fall short in the third, as Hartford's Devin DiDiomete scored on a crazy scramble in front of the net making it 3-1. This is as close as Hartford would come as Poulin kept shutting the door on everything the Wolf Pack threw his way. Jon Sim, who had two goals so far on the night, was hit in the nose area with a stick, and left the ice not to return. Also, Dustin Kohn did not come out after intermission to play the third period. However, the Tigers stayed strong and Jesse Joensuu put in a empty netter to make it 4-1. Shots in the third, for Bridgeport 8 and for Hartford 10.

Providence offense stuns Sound Tigers as they lose 6-1

The Sound Tigers could not make it three straight wins last night as they fell to the Providence Bruins 6-1. Providence scored two goals in the second period with in fifteen seconds of one another to kill any momentum the sound Tigers had.

In the first period Providence had a couple of very good scoring chances. One of them being a lose puck sliding out of a pile of players, came over to Providences' Lane MacDermid who rang one off the goal post with a wide open net. Then the rough stuff started as Sound Tigers Travis Hamonic laid a hit on Antoine Roussel in the corner. Roussel didn't like the hit to much, as they skated up the ice Roussel dropped the gloves with Hamonic. Both goalies continued to play well as the period wore on making some key saves. A couple minutes after Micheal Haley went toe to toe with Jeff LoVecchio which saw Haley get the better of LoVecchio. Shots in the Period, for Bridgeport 7 and Providence 16.

Providence broke out in the second as they scored two goals in fifteen second. The first one came from Jamie Arniel as he threw one towards the net looking for his man on the back door but it hit off of Sound Tigers defenseman Dustin Kohn and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Then a bad turn over lead to a pass in front to former Sound Tiger Jeremy Reich who buried the puck for a 2-0 Providence lead. After Colliton laid a huge hit on a Providence player, at the same time Haley dropped the gloves for the second time this time against Nathan Mclver. Before the period was over Providince would get one more. Yury Alexandrov's quick wrist shot beat Mikko Koskinen to make it 3-0. All momentum was gone for the Sound Tigers as they headed to the locker room. Shots in the period, for Bridgeport 7 and Providence 11.

The third would be dominated by Providence as they continued to out play the Sound Tigers in every spot on the ice. Only five and a half minutes into the third a shot by Jordan Lavallee-Smotherman beat Koskinen high glove to make it 4-0 Providence. Sound Tigers would score there lone goal on the power play as Rhett Rakhshani wrist one past a sprawled out Providence goalie to make it 4-1. The Sound Tigers turned it up after this getting a couple great scoring chances but just could not beat Providence goalie Micheal Hutchinson. Providence got two more goals only seconds apart again late in the period as Smotherman got his second of the game when he ripped a slap shot past Koskinen blocker side on the power play to make it 5-1. Twenty nine seconds later Lane Macdermid banked home a rebound to make it 6-1. Shots in the Period, For Bridgeport 13 and Providence 10.

Sim records hat trick as the Sound Tigers win 6-5 in a shoot out over Springfield

It was Cool Fun 101 today and Sound Tigers didn't disappoint the 7,000 plus school students in attendance. The Sound Tigers defeated Springfield in the shoot out 6-5. They were led by Jon Sim who had just cleared waivers and has been sent down from the New York Islanders on a loan.

The Sound Tigers got off to a quick start in the first period as Jon Sim found the puck behind the net on the power play and did a quick little wrap around that beat Springfield's David LeNeveu through the legs only 1:03 into the game, to make it 1-0. They struck again about two minutes later, as Justin Dibenedetto one timed a great cross ice pass from Jesse Joensuu to make it 2-0. The game was not even three minutes old and the Sound Tigers were up by two. Sim would get his second goal of the game as he cut through the two Springfield defenders, took a shot that was stopped, but followed up his rebound that sat right in the crease; he banged it home to make it 3-0. After the goal, the rough stuff started to pick up when Travis Hamonic, who had challenged a Springfield player before hand, finally found somebody to fight. Unfortunately, he found Springfield's Tom Sestito, who is about 4 inches taller then Hamonic and has a longer reach. Sestito had his way and didn't let Hamonic get more then one punch in. Less then two minutes later, Micheal Haley dropped the gloves with Falcon's forward Nate Guenin. Haley got the win in this bout. Springfield would strike late though, as Matt Calvert came down on Sound Tigers goalie Nathan Lawson, on a semi breakaway and beat Lawson five hole to make the score 3-1. Shots in the period, For Bridgeport 14 and Springfield 8.

Springfield's first come from behind rally in the game started in the second, as Springfield's Maxsim Mayorov sprung on a breakaway and beat Lawson glove side to bring the Falcons within one 3-2. The Falcons would strike yet again only thirty two seconds after their second goal, as Micheal Ryan tipped a shot from the point past Lawson, glove side to tie the game 3-3. The Sound Tigers would regain the lead however, as David Ullstrom shot from the slot and beat a screened LeNeveu and trickled in to make it 4-3 Sound Tigers. Jon Sim scored his third goal of the game in the second, as he made a move around a Springfield defender and took a shot that was stopped, but he got his rebound and buried it top shelf for the hat trick. His goal put the Tigers up 5-3. Shots in the period, for Bridgeport 13 and for Springfield 13.

The third saw a lot of action down in front on Lawson, including a puck that trickled across the goal line but never entered the net and after a lengthy review it was deemed to be no goal. Everything in the third was going the way the Sound Tigers wanted, until about midway through the period, when Springfield picked it up a bit and mounted their second come back of the game. Justin Dibenedetto who had a good game, getting some great scoring chances, was called for a two minute roughing penalty for falling on Springfield's goalie. With body's crashing the net left and right the puck managed to make it's way to the point where a shot by Calvert beat a stick-less Lawson to make it 5-4. It was Calvert's second of the game. A minute and fifteen seconds later, the Falcons struck again as Steven Goertzen, who stood wide open in the circle, put one past a splitting Lawson to tie the game at 5-5. The Sound Tigers would need extra time for a second consecutive game to settle this one. Shots in the period, for Bridgeport 11 and Springfield 13.

Overtime brought some good scoring chances by both teams but no goals were scored, so it was on to the shootout. Bridgeport decided to shoot second, so Calvert came down on Lawson and took a shot low blocker side and Lawson made the save. Then it was Rhett Rakhshani for the Sound tigers, he came in and made a nice forehand snap shot, beating LeNeveu glove side. In the second, third, and forth rounds both teams remained scoreless. In the fifth round, Mayorov came down and beat Lawson with a quick shot, blocker side. It was up to Jon Sim now, if he scored, the Tigers would win. He did just that, as he came down on LeNeveu and did a couple quick forehand fakes before shooting it glove side over a sprawled out LeNeveu.
